Chapter 8: Social Media and the Collapse of Shared Reality

Social media didn't accelerate cable's trends. It changed the structure of information itself. Where cable segmented audiences, social media individualized them. Facebook's 2006 News Feed defined relevance by engagement metrics. False news on Twitter was about 70% more likely to be retweeted than true news and reached people roughly six times faster (MIT, 2018). The result: fragmentation of reality.
